Not Always The Thought That Counts

We are SADLY nearing the end of Birthday Week.

Excuse me I’m getting a little choked up…

Ok. I’m fine. Breathe breathe. Only 51 more weeks til next year… I can DO THIS.

So I know we don’t EXPECT gifts for our birthday…not huge gigantic ones I mean I  dearly LOVE the homemade wrapping paper Liam created and the card he signed himself.

Thinking back I can remember gifts I received that really meant the world. One year my nana got me Pac-Man for the Atari which at the time was IMPOSSIBLE to find. I treasure collages friends made me and the pearl drop earrings my parents gave me for my 30th birthday that I also wore in my wedding. My sister got me a balloon-gram one year that was just AMAZING because I  think at the time I was about 12?Who am I kidding – a huge bouquet of balloons kicks butt any time? I’m certain my brother got me concert tickets for Bon Jovi one year. I also received both chocolate chip banana bread and a bottle of pinto grigio in the mail from a friend that just made me SMILE as I opened it. That friend pretty much always sends a package of pure love every birthday.

Two years ago Dan surprised me with announcing he was taking me to Cancun for 10 days. I sobbed like a fool because I needed the break so badly and we needed time together alone just as much. There are many other gifts I have gotten that have touched, surprised or delighted me.

So I need to know… what is the gift that you have loved the most for your birthday. I know that I can’t wait to open it!!!!

  1. ok.. I’ll start.

The year I turned 29, Troy went OVER-THE-TOP with indulgent surprises. he started the day by making me breakfast, then giving me diamond earrings. he booked me an appointment to get my hair done by my favorite guy EVER in seattle.

picked me up from there, took me to lunch at one of our fav places (Belltown Pub for a steak sandwich!). Back to my place so I could pack, then back downtown to check into a hotel.

There he gave me a diamond necklace. so my earrings would have something to match.

THEN we went to dinner at El Gaucho’s, THEN we went to another of our haunts.. Belltown Billiards, where he had organized a surprise party for me.

It was truly a great birthday, not just cause it was full of fabulous things, but it was the first birthday I had that I was dating someone I really loved.

I just reminded him that my 39th is coming, and I wouldn’t mind having that kind of a birthday again.

but hooray for YOU! may this week, this YEAR be indulgent and love-filled and just one present after another. LOVE YOU!

  2. My husband always gets me great gifts. Do you think i can remember any on the spot like this? I cant!

I do remember when I was six I wanted a Barbie doll and a bike. And I got both of them. This was HUGE. We really didn’t have any money — my mom was working really hard and the ends were barely meeting. She often didn’t get the things I wanted because she didn’t get why I wanted them so she didn’t think i really wanted them — this happened more and more as I got older. But I remember my sixth birthday. I got exactly what I asked for. I still remember that birthday..

  3. Mine is very simple….on my 30th birthday, 4 days after having Ava, my sister-in-law gave me a silver bracelet with both my girls’ names on it. It was the first thing I received that included both kids and I loved it. I still wear it almost every day.

  4. Hmmm…does it have to be birthday gifts? My family growing up didn’t make big deals out of birthdays – at least not mine – probably because I was the youngest of 4 and well, whatever. No grudges. But Christmas?? My favorite Christmas present came from my sister when I was like 9 or so (and she was 21 or so) and she gave me a Cabbage Patch Doll – with the cornsilk hair! My neighbor had like 100 of those dolls and I had NONE. But that Christmas I had the bestest and newest and prettiest doll!
Also – I always love Mike’s Valentine’s Day “gift” to me – he makes my favorite dinner – galobki! yum yum! And Cleans out my car – vacuums and everything. Silly, yes, but I love it!

  5. just dropping a comment to say I hope you’re enjoying the wrap-up of birthday week!! cause yes.. I think today and tomorrow should count, too!

what? you were going to ask what kind of cake we would want?

that’s a tough one! torn between the moosemuch cheesecake from harry and david, a super-fab custom cake from a big-name like collette peters or elisa strauss, or even the ace-of-cakes dude…. or maybe something simple. like a cheesecake with chocolate ganache layer on top.

of course, I could settle for anything, as long as it doesn’t have almond flavoring. cause really? ACK.

or were you going to ask who’d be invited? or is that tomorrow? meh; this comment is long enough. happy birthday week, babe.

  6. i can’t remember what my favorite present of all time is.
but i can remember the worst.
    (i’m not always a glass-half-empty girl)

it was a set of towels…from my grandma…when i was 6. toys, people…at that age…all you really want are toys.

  7. Last year, my husband flew my best friend in from New York to spend my 30th birthday with me. My favorite cousins and my sister came, too! I was going through post-partum depression and cried off and on the whole time, of course, but seriously? Seeing them Got Me Through.

  8. well, i can’t seem to remember one thing i’ve gotten. Nothing really stands out. Also, as I’ve gotten older, birthdays just don’t mean that much to me anymore, and all I usually get is money or something for the house, which are both great!
